Germany – Moln
German Marks in Croatia
That long-awaited September finally arrived; the month in which we met again our German friends whom we had already met when we visited Moln last year. This time we had the home field advantage, which we also used well. Our dear guests arrived on Monday, 20th September. We didn’t even let them rest after their exhausting journey, but little by little they were getting to know Zagreb, which they were so familiar with that after a week they could find their way around by heart.
The warm reception was organised in the hall of II. gimnazija, on Tuesday morning. After the principal’s welcoming speech, our English drama group gave two performances which delighted our guests. After an entertaining programme followed a true German organisation of events– work, order and discipline. We were divided into linguistically mixed groups and got assignments. Since the main topic of the exchange was German Marks in Croatia, each group got intriguing and interactive projects including history, architecture and art, food, German products in Croatian shops and, the best of all, political science and economy. We had access to computers, and we spent an hour a day working on the projects. In the meantime, we simply had excellent time! Although to some, sightseeing in the German language does not seem very dynamic, we made good use of the revision of our knowledge so that we could make the quiz which followed more complicated. They had to complete different tasks which would otherwise be – without difficulties – completed by only a few: counting Schlosser’s stairs, interviewing passers by, taking photographs with village women at the market, asking for information about trains…
Naturally, they managed exceptionally well with the little help of their Croats who were always there. After endless walks during which we were also caught in a drizzle, we concluded that the best idea was to visit the September Feast and have fun with the always topical and urban band Novi Fosili as well as visit the amusement park.
During the next day, our German teacher Jasna Jukić Vukoja cheered us up with the news that we would be guests in the programme of the RTL television channel, where we met the always smiling Tomislav Jelinčić, learnt a thing or two about broadcasting and producing television programmes and in the end got some presents.
Then followed a visit to the Museum of the City of Zagreb where a kind curator showed us through all significant periods of the city’s history.
The following day was a pure joy – a two-day trip to the city of Zadar and the Plitvice Lakes. We stayed at a motel and went sightseeing round Zadar, listened to the sea organ, greeted the sun, nearly froze at the beautiful lakes and got back to Zagreb in time to come to the party at the Boogaloo Club and to sing along with the band Prljavo kazalište. Admittedly, we had a late night and at the presentation next day we turned up with bags under our eyes, which still didn’t stop us from presenting our project on which we diligently worked for several days. An additional stimulation was refreshments after our well accomplished job. Hardly had we eaten when we had other things to do – a trip with our families to Kumrovec, Samobor, the ZOO, Maksimir, etc. In the evening, we had a farewell party (in the heart of the woods, with absolute sound isolation) where we laughed, cried and danced.
We said goodbye in a slightly sad mood, knowing that the train was leaving at 9.40 am the next day. We waved white handkerchiefs, the occasional tear was shed, plans were made for a reunion, and group photographs were taken. The Croatian exchange was over, perhaps it was even better than the German one, if that is at all possible. We thank our teacher Jasna Jukić Vukoja and a German teacher from II gimnazija for excellent organisation and help.
The Germans are at home now, far from Zagreb and us all, but the holidays are almost here, and, after all, Hamburg is not far away any more… There is always next year, isn’t there?
